Serving as a camp director is not only shepherding our counselors and campers, but also monitoring the weather as an amateur meteorologist. Because of the layout of our facilities and our outdoor activities, it is crucial to always know the weather conditions. We have safety protocols for strong summer rainstorms and for hot daytime temperatures. We train our counselors on our inclement weather practices and designate one counselor each summer to serve as our official bell-ringer for the weather bell. The weather bell serves as a warning to camp that they need to seek shelter in designated areas because of inclement weather. The campers are instructed on Sunday afternoon about the weather bell, the times when it will be rung, and the places where they should seek shelter.
